Welcome to the
Wilkie Wines Estate Website
Wilkie Estate wines are full-bodied fruit-driven wines that can be consumed when purchased or cellared with the right conditions. Organic wines have natural
sulfur added, with maximum limits well below conventional wines, necessitating very careful handling of the ferments and maturation of the wine.
Wilkie Estate has grown and produced organically Cabernet Sauvignon, Ruby Cabernet, Merlot, Colombard and Verdelho.
Wilkie Estate has been operated as a family-owned vineyard for over 30 years. Sustainable practice was the way we could ensure that the next generation could take over running a healthy vineyard. We have been using traditional sustainable practices since the vineyard was established in 1984 and during the conversion period from 1997. Wilkie Estate has been certified organic by the OCA since 1999.
The Adelaide Plains has a Mediterranean climate with very low disease pressure with our biggest problem being weed control. Weed control was done with mechanical cultivation until recently. We are now able to combat weeds by using organic composted mulch under vine and native grasses between the rows.
Wilkie Estate has always produced premium wine and has won awards in the national show circuit against conventional wines. Consumers can be assured that there are no agrochemical residues or artificial preservatives in the wine and they can still enjoy the consistency of quality found in modern conventional wines.
The Australian Organic market is quite small compared with Europe, Japan and North America, but will grow as consumers become aware of the availability of organic products as consistency and quality improve.
Wilkie Estate distributes through the UK wine merchant, Bottle Green. 90% of our wine goes to the UK, where it can be purchased through supermarkets to satisfy the high demand for wines grown sustainably. The balance is sold domestically through mail order and Option Wines in Adelaide.
Promotions are occasionally staged through wine tastings at organic fairs organised through certified associations.
