Bernard Wilkie and his step-son, Trevor Spurr, established a small vineyard in 1978 to specialise in premium wines in the well-established wine region of the Adelaide Plains in South Australia.

The vineyard was planted on red brown soils over friable calcium clay. The climate is warm to hot and dry over the growing season with the fruit easily ripening early in March. A long dry autumn followed by a cool moist winter makes for a perfect Mediterranean climate. These conditions allow traditional low-input viticulture with very little or no disease pressure.

In 1990, we vertically integrated into wine and, with modern winemaking techniques, we produced award-winning wines that preserved the natural flavours from this estate vineyard. As this was done without any artificial chemicals, we decided to produce wines that eventually could be certified organic.  This was was achieved in the vintage of 1999. Full certification from the Biological Farmers Association allows Wilkie Estate to export to organic markets in the UK, Belgium and Japan.

Wilkie Estate has mail order from the vineyard and distributes to restaurants and liquor stores through Option Wines, wholesalers in Adelaide.

Trevor Spurr has had over 20 years professional experience in the Australian wine industry and is currently working as a viticulturalist in McLaren Vale South Australia.
